Ray was arrested for the murder of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Atlanta in 1968. He was found guilty and sentenced to 99 years in prison. He later unsuccessfully attempted to recant his guilty plea. Dr. King’s family later interviewed Ray and believe that he is not responsible for the murder. Ray died in prison in 1998.
