Crusted scabies

Crusted scabies

Crusted scabies, also known as Norwegian scabies, is a severe form of scabies caused by the same mite, Sarcoptes scabiei. It occurs in individuals with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, immunocompromised, or those with neurological conditions. Unlike typical scabies, which involves a mild rash and itching, crusted scabies is characterized by thick, crusty patches of skin that can harbor thousands of mites. These patches can be widespread, making the condition highly contagious. Treatment involves topical scabicides and oral medications like ivermectin, but managing crusted scabies requires more aggressive and prolonged therapy.
